Little Lions Speech Pathology Pty Ltd is a private speech pathology practice based in Joondalup, Western Australia.

Purpose of this Policy

Little Lions Speech Pathology respects your rights and privacy. We endeavour to keep information regarding you or your child with the utmost confidentiality. We realise that it is important that you understand the purpose for which we collect details about your child’s health, as well as how this information is used at our practice and to whom this information might be disclosed.

  • Telling you how we keep and use your personal information.

  • Following Australian privacy laws.

  • Answering any questions you have about privacy and the collection of your personal information. 

  • Talking to you about any complaints you have about privacy.

The policy of our practice is to follow these procedures:

  • At Little Lions Speech Pathology, we collect information for the purpose of providing assessment and treatment for you or your child.  Personal information, such as your name, determining your eligibility for services, address, and health insurance details, will be used for the purpose of addressing accounts to you, as well as processing payments and writing to you about our services, and any issues affecting you or your child’s treatment.

  • Whilst we respect your right to withhold consent to the practice’s request for personal information, it may unfortunately result in the practice not being able to provide therapy to your child. 

  • We may disclose your or your child’s information to other health care or educational professionals or require it from them if it is necessary in the context of your or your child’s assessment and treatment. In that event, disclosure of your personal details will be minimised wherever possible.

  • On seldom occasions we may also use parts of your health information for research purposes, in case discussions or seminars, as this may provide benefit to other patients. Should that happen, your personal identity will not be disclosed without your consent to do so.

  • Your medical history, treatment records and other material relevant to your treatment will be kept here. You may inspect or request copies of our records regarding your or your child’s treatment at any time or seek an explanation from your speech pathologist. Statutory fees may apply in relation to the types of access you seek. If you request an explanation of our records or a written summary, fees will apply to these services.

Who may we disclose your information to? 

As a general principle, disclosure will not be made to any person who is not involved in either your or your child’s treatment or the administration of this practice, without your prior consent.

We may disclose your information to the following people:

(a)       Other health professionals involved in your treatment

Your personal information will generally only be used by the speech pathologist involved in your child’s care, however on occasion your care may be provided by a number of health professionals (for example., paediatrician, occupational therapist and/or psychologist) working or consulting together. We may disclose your information to these health professionals as part of the process of providing your care and to other health professionals involved in your care.

(b)       The referrer

Little Lions Speech Pathology will usually send a discharge summary to the referrer (i.e., your medical practitioner) following discharge from Little Lions Speech Pathology or at other times, as required for your care. 

If you do not wish us to provide a copy of your discharge summary to the referrer you must let us know. Also, if the referrer’s details have changed, please let us know. 

(c)        Relatives, guardian, close friends or legal representative

We may provide information about your condition to your parent, child, other relatives, close personal friends, guardians, or to a responsible person for you, unless you tell us that you do not wish us to disclose your health information to any such person.

If you have any queries or concerns about our handling of your health information, please do not hesitate to raise these concerns with our practice.

How we will protect your personal information

Little Lions Speech Pathology will take reasonable steps to protect your personal information from misuse, interference, loss, unauthorised access, modification, or disclosure.  We use technologies and processes to protect your privacy.  Except otherwise required by Australian law, we will destroy or permanently de-identify your personal information which is our possession, and which is no longer needed for the purpose for which it was collected. 

How you can access and correct your health information

You have a right to access the personal and health information that we hold about you. You can also request an amendment to your personal and health information should you believe that it is inaccurate. 

If we do not agree to change your medical record/personal information in accordance with your request, we will permit you to make a statement of the requested changes and we will enclose this with your record. 

Should you wish to obtain access to or request changes to your health record you can contact our practice for further details. 

Please note that Little Lions Speech Pathology may recover reasonable costs associated with supplying this information to you. 

Website Usage

When you visit our website, our web server automatically records some general information about your visit but does not recognise or record any individual information about you. The information we record and use for statistical purposes is:

  • Your server address

  • The date and time

  • The pages accessed and documents downloaded

    • The previous site visited

    • The type of browser used

We can only identify you personally if you give us this information voluntarily.

We do not know your email address unless you give it to us. We will only record your email address if you provide it when submitting a form or sending us a message. We will use it only for the purpose you have provided it for, and will not disclose it without your consent.

If you have given us your email address, but do not want to receive an email from us in the future, please contact us and we will remove your email address from our database.

We use this information to improve the content of our website and respond to any requests or enquiries you submit. If you subscribe for news and updates, we will send you information about our services and upcoming events. If you supply your phone number when submitting an enquiry, we will only use it to respond to that enquiry.

We use this information internally and only share it with staff who need it as part of normal business activities. We do not disclose or sell your personal information for use in mailing lists or databases.
