Screenings by Little Lions: Hocking Stars
Speech Pathology + Occupational Therapy Screening Assessments
25 March 2025
Through Speech Pathology screening assessments, our therapist will aim to identify any difficulties in children across the following areas:
Speech: This refers to the way a child pronounces sounds in words (e.g. instead of saying ‘cat’ they say ‘tat’).
Expressive language: This refers to the words a child is using and the way they are combining them to form sentences and discourse. Language is important for them to be able to tell stories and express needs.
Receptive language: This relates to how well a child understands things such as their ability to follow instructions, answer questions and solve problems.
Through Occupational Therapy screening assessments, our therapist will aim to identify difficulties in the following areas:
Self-care skills: dressing, eating, grooming and toileting
Fine motor skills: This refers to the actions of the hand for coordinated accurate movements needed for tasks like handwriting and using cutlery.
Gross motor skills: This refers to the actions that require use of the larger muscles of the body, like running, hopping and skipping.
Visual perception skills: The ability to copy shapes and patterns, find items, and recognise differences.
Social skills: The ability to wait, take turns and share with others.
Sensory processing and emotional regulation: The ability to listen to the environmental feedback a child's body is receiving and respond accordingly.
For each child that is screened by Little Lions, a summary letter will be provided to the family. The letter will clarify whether their child is performing age appropriately or below average for their age. Based on a child’s performance, speech pathology intervention may be recommended, and Little Lions can then arrange an appointment for the family.
Consultations are available for parents who wish to discuss their child’s results.
